The author of the book chronicling Senator Laforge's 2004 Presidential campaign added, "The amount of money set aside for alternative energy production and research was also influenced by the fact that the U.S. would spend over $100 billion on the Iraq War in 2004. Laforge was adamant that the amount budgeted for our country's future should be a sum greater than what we would spend to stabilize and rebuild Iraq. She felt our people and country should come first."
Obama's $100 billion - 10 year program in comparison is a small fraction of the amount of money we currently spend for one year of OPEC oil. In the year 2008, it is estimated a sum of $450,000,000 – $450 billion - was paid to Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Algeria, Angola, Nigeria, and other OPEC countries to fulfill our nation's oil needs.
The present and former administrations, including congress, failed to take any significant measures to alter the dangerous and self-destructive path America travels to quench its voracious oil thirst. Author David Hearne said, "I feel Senator Katherine Laforge would applaud President elect Obama's new energy program as a movement in the right direction for our country’s energy problem, - but I also think she would question why Mr. Obama does not push to use the most productive ways to make bio fuels.
